OKM – Ekklesia Facilitation Training
Course Title: Making Disciples in the Ekklesia
Period of Offering: TBD – (1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd ) Trimester

Course Instructor: John Schaenzer

I. Course Description: This class will provide theoretical and practical
information that will empower us to fulfill the command of Jesus in
Matthew 28:19 to go and make disciples. Scripture describes in many
verses the aspects of being a disciple. We will explore these aspects
and discover the practical application of them in daily life. We will then
be able to confidently say, as Paul did, “Be imitators of me, as I am of
Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)

II. Course Objectives:
In order to make disciples we must first be disciples. Many know what
it is to be a believer, or to trust God, but many fall short of being able
to describe what a disciple is in a way that would elevate the life of
faith we seek to have. Few people have had some one “disciple” them,
leading them into maturity in the faith. This is how we may obtain what
Paul writes of in Ephesians 4 about building up the body of Christ,
“until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children. We must
learn discernment and mature in the faith.
A. Demonstrate knowledge:
We will learn what it is to be a disciple according to the scripture
we will study. We will explore what a disciple is as well as what a
disciple does. We will also explore the differences among disciples
according to their giftings. We will see that while the giftings may
differ from person to person, the basic disciplines remain the same for
all disciples. We will see that Christ Jesus is at the center of all things
relating to being disciples.
B. Application:
We will come to understand that knowledge alone is not
sufficient to being a disciple of Christ Jesus. The knowledge must be
actively applied to everyday life for each believer. We will explore how
to practically use the knowledge we gain in daily life. Through
applying what we learn to our own lives, we will discover the natural
flow of sharing it with others, thus, making disciples.

III. Course Outline:
Will be published when finalized.

IV. Course Texts:
There will be no required purchases of books for this course. All
materials will be from existing documents, web sites, videos, and
audio podcasts. Certain books may be referred to in passing, and links
may be provided for their purchase if one should desire to do so.

V. Bible References:
We will refer to many bible references. I typically use the English
Standard Version, published in 2001 by Crossway. It is a formal
equivalence type translation that is set at an eighth grade reading
level.

VI. Course Requirements:
Anyone who joins us for this course is expected to be able to discuss
the material that will be assigned for each session. Some of the
material will include: text from documents or websites, audio
podcasts, videos on the topics for the individual sessions. Each
person will be expected to, as much as possible, be on time for the
meeting and be prepared to participate in the discussion with
thoughts, questions, and comments appropriate to the topic of the
session. There are no prerequisites for this class.

VII. Course completion:
Upon completion of this course, we will be able to show by our
behavior what it is to be a disciple, assuming we have believed and
applied to our lives the lessons we have learned. We will also be able to confidently make disciples of anyone who desires to learn what it is to be a disciple of Christ Jesus.
